La Paz - Oruro - Uyuni Salt Lakes
Arrival in La Paz, reception and transfer to the 4* El Rey Hotel.
Day 2: La PazAfter breakfast, a city tour of La Paz. With its own unique topography containing few flat areas and protected by its eternal guardian, the snow peak of Ilimani (6402m), La Paz houses the seat of government of Bolivia. A visit to the Plaza Murillo (with its presidential palace, national congress and metropolitan cathedral), its famous witches market and a choice of fine museums. With many interesting museums to visit, choose between the National Museum of Art, The Ethnographic and Folklore Museum and The Museo Tambo Quirquincho (old fashioned dresses and silverware amongst others). On Calle Jaen, a beautiful colonial street, there are four museums which may all be visited one after another. These are: The Precious Metals Museum, The Casa de Murillo, The Litoral Boliviano or Military Museum and the Juan de Vargas Museum; there is even a Coca museum. A visit will also be made to the Valley of the Moon before returning to your hotel.
Day 3: La Paz - Oruro - UyuniAfter breakfast, transfer to Oruro for the fabulous train journey south to Uyuni. You will pass the huge Poopo lake, where many flamingoes come to feed. Arrival in Uyuni at night, transfer to your hotel.
Day 4: Uyuni Salt LakesAfter breakfast, you will leave Uyuni in a 4X4 vehicle, heading towards Colchani, a town of only 70 families, and where their life is dedicated to the extraction of salt. Continuing on through this amazing sea of salt, which incidently are the highest salt lakes in the world. Arrive at Pescado island, a rocky island in this ocean of sea where hundreds of huge cacti grow. Lunch on the island before continuing past several salt villages such as Puerto Chubica, Mañica, Colcha and onto the village of San Juan. Accomodation in the Posada.
Day 5: Uyuni Salt LakesAfter breakfast, continue your journey passing a military post at Chiguana. You we will stop at Paso de Leon, to observe the Ollagua Volcano which is currently mildly active. A stop will also be made at various lagunas, Cañapa, Hedionda, Chiarcota, Honda and Ramiditas. Lunch and an opportunity to observe three different kinds of flamingos: James', Andino and Chilean. You will pass the Siloli desert and possible observe Vizcachas, rodents that inhabit the salares. You will also see the famous stone tree. In the afternoon you will arrive at the beautiful Laguna Colorado, an amazing red lake. Dinner and accommodation at the lodge.
Day 6: Uyuni Salt LakesThe tour carries on to Sol de Mañana, a volcanic zone where there are many geysers that shoot sulphur steam high into the bubbling mud cauldrons. Further ahead you will stop at the natural hot springs where you are welcome to take an enviting soak. After a rest, a visit to the Dali desert where huge rocks are scattered, and are so-called due to their similarity to works by Salvador Dali. Continue on to Laguna Verde, the green lake, and see how the colour of the water changes. The lake is in the base of the Llicambur volcano. After lunch, return to Mallku Villa Mar and accommodation at the Posada.
Day 7: Uyuni - La PazYour final visit will be to the train cemetery before arriving back in Uyuni. Transfer to your hotel for a day in-use before transfer to the train station for the very early morning train back to Oruro.
Day 8: La PazArrival in Oruro, transfer to La Paz and onto the airport for your flight home.
